New Perspectives. New Expertise. Three Coaches Join The Team

At Hammer & Axe, our mission has always been to empower and guide runners toward their loftiest goals through effective training and meaningful relationships. Expanding our coaching roster with individuals who bring unique experiences, strengths, and areas of expertise is part of that mission - allowing us to support an even broader range of athletes.

We’re excited to officially welcome Ben Fleming, Ryan Adams, and Wes Porter to the HAX platform. While each are pursing similar paths as elite runners, their journeys to get here and the perspectives they bring are distinctly their own.

Ben Fleming

A Virginia Tech walk-on turned ACC Champion and NCAA All-American, Ben experienced rapid growth in college before four major injuries in a single year pushed him toward professional triathlon. However, his true passion for running called him back. Now, he’s focused on “stacking average days” and building strength through consistency, while keeping his eyes on big goals on the track.

As a coach, Ben emphasizes durability, helping athletes become strong and resilient to handle the demands of training over the long-term. He’s especially excited to work with new runners, comeback athletes, and those who struggle with injuries or consistency.

Ryan Adams

A record-setter at Furman University, 6x All-American, and Mexican National Champion, Ryan’s career has been shaped by community, competition, and resilience. From youth races in Akron, OH to navigating challenging setbacks in his professional career, Ryan has learned the value of having the right support system. Getting back into a rhythm now with training, Ryan approaches running with patience, perseverance, and gratitude for the opportunities ahead.

Ryan’s coaching philosophy centers on trust, stability, and long-term growth, especially during periods of uncertainty or recovery. He’s most passionate about working with high school and collegiate-bound athletes in track and cross country, as well as those managing injuries, inconsistency, or self-doubt.

Wes Porter

An NCAA Champion at the University of Virginia and now a professional runner for Under Armour, Wes has embraced the joys of running from the start. From running alongside his mom in elementary school, he steadily grew his commitment to the sport until it was all-in. Whether cross training for 10-weeks to return and help his team win a state title in high school, or embracing the rigor of elite collegiate training, Wes has always been motivated to do what it takes. Even with a no-excuses mentality at his core, he’s learned to find a balance that keeps running fun and sustainable.

Wes coaches with a focus on adaptability and discipline, helping athletes figure out what works best for them both mentally and physically. He’s particularly motivated to work with busy professionals and high school athletes, drawing on his own experience navigating high-level training alongside academics, work, and life.
